More than 100 schools nationwide have closed because of the swine flu, affecting some 56,000 students, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
Whether from actual cases of swine flu or the impending threat of the virus, school officials in eight states saw the precaution necessary.
In Texas, where the flu has claimed the life of a toddler, the Fort Worth Independent School District has announced that it will close all of its schools, a move that affects 80,000 children, until further notice.
The decision, officials said, was prompted by one confirmation of the flu at one school and three other likely cases at By immediately, said Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the WHO, said, "This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharm industry and the business community that certain actions now should be taken with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace."
